Using traditional millinery methods, you will learn how to block and stiffen sinamay on a small wooden hat block using steam and pins. You will also practice a range of summer trimming and veiling techniques which will then be implemented to create a striking percher hat suitable for summer events. These include hand shaping, making twists and bows using sinamay or straw. Your hat will be finished inside with a petersham ribbon and a head attachment.

By the end of the workshop you will have acquired

*Your own hat to take away and wear
*A list of where to shop for future millinery materials
*Instructions on how to recreate what you have learned at home

What to bring
Materials will be available to purchase on the day, however if you would like to bring your own please do. We will supply all of your tools but please bring your own if you prefer. We’re happy to discuss what you’ll need, so feel free to get in touch.

Sophie offers a range of workshops for those wishing to explore the world of millinery. Whether as a beginner, to extend your existing knowledge or just to try something new, our workshops cater for all levels.

With her years of experience as a couture milliner, designer and millinery tutor, Sophie loves to share her knowledge and passion for this exquisite craft. Each class involves in-depth demonstrations, one to one tuition, expert tips accompanied by carefully prepared instructions to take home and practice what you have learned.

Sophie is happy to offer design advice, guiding your creativity into exciting new territory. From helping create something to match your personal style, to simply matching your hat to a special
outfit, we encourage you to develop your unique design identity.

All classes are kept to just 2-3 pupils, so each individual is guaranteed full attention in a relaxed and fun atmosphere with complimentary tea, coffee and refreshments on hand.

Times
Workshops run on weekends 10am-5pm with 1 hour lunch break at 1pm unless otherwise stated.

Location
Workshops are run at Sophie’s Putney studio, London Sw15, where Sophie creates her own pieces. We are in a residential area with Putney Bridge, East Putney and Putney rail station all approximately 10 minutes walk from the studio.
There are lots of facilities on Putney high street around five minutes walk away, with a Sainsbury’s garage and numerous cafes close by which come in handy at lunch time.

Bookings and payment
Bookings will be taken up until 10 days prior to the start of the workshop. Payment will be due upon booking with a 50% deposit included in the price. Please get in touch to enquire about availability and to book a place.

Cancellations
Cancellations made more than two weeks prior to the workshop will receive a full refund. After this date the 50% deposit is non refundable.
In the unlikely event we need to cancel a course, we will notify you as soon as possible. We will do our best to rearrange the class at a time convenient for you, otherwise a full refund will be given.
